BP is an energy company primarily focused on upstream oil and gas. BP operates in 80 countries through two business segments: Exploration & Production (83% of adj. 2010 revenues) and Refining & Marketing and is one of the Super Majors in line with Exxon, Shell, Chevron and Total. BP had 18.071 mmboe of proved reserves (end 2010) equal to 13 years of 2010 production (3.8 mmboe per day). After the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) spill in 2010, BP charged GBP 26.5bn (USD 40.9bn) to their income statement. Included in this charge is the USD 20bn Trust commitment. Dividends were cut after the spill, but the Company has now started their dividend payout again. As per Q2 2011, BP states that the funds set aside is their fair estimate of the total clean up after the spill. However, there is a certain risk that further claims will come, if the USD 20bn fund is not sufficient to meet the claims. Besides production and liability risk, the oil price is the most important factor for BP, influencing both earnings and the willingness to invest in new projects.
