Kingfisher (KGF) is Europe’s leading home improvement retail group and third largest in the world. Its main retail brands are B&Q, Castorama, Brico Dépôt and Screwfix. It is the number 1 ‘do it yourself’ (DIY) retailer in the UK, China, France and Poland. KGF’s biggest market, the UK (41% of revenue 2011), saw decreasing sales due to a weak economic environment but saw improved margins attributable to ongoing efficiency improvements. The company has seen strong results from its operations in Eastern Europe and is expecting to add 17% of new floor space in the region. Even though B&Q is the DIY market leader in China, the company has been unable to create a profit from this market. KGF has limited its losses by closing stores and cost cutting, and it expects to breakeven FY2012 but the decision to stay in China remains uncertain. The company has focused on own brand global to centralize its main sourcing operations product which should serve to further greatly increase margins and efficiencies.
