Prudential Plc is a UK based global financial services firm that engages in life insurance (traditional and unit-linked), savings and fund management. The company provides life insurance and pension savings to approximately 7m customers in the UK and it’s the third biggest provider of variable annuities in the US. In total, the company has over 25m customers and AUM of £340bn. Prudential has a strong presence in South East Asia, where it is the largest onshore mutual fund manager. This region’s insurance market is considered to have very high growth potential and the company has managed to strengthen its position here. However, no more business is being written in Japan as of 2010. Prudential has good solvency with an Insurance Group Directive (IGD) capital surplus of £4bn (up from £1.5bn in 2008) and its exposure to European sovereign debt was £3.6bn, which of exposure to PIIGS was only £363m. Moreover, almost 30 percent of Prudential’s investments are unit-linked which gives the company more moderate exposure to market risk.
