FBI-LEEDA and LifeLock Deliver Identity Theft Training to Law Enforcement

Increased identity theft awareness is important not only for consumers

but for law enforcement officials who are working daily to combat the

crime and put thieves behind bars. In an effort to further educate law

enforcement, LifeLock, Inc. (www.lifelock.com),

and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA)

are sponsoring two upcoming identity theft summits in June. Each event

will include a day-long training summit hosted in a different city,

providing local and statewide law enforcement officials with the latest

information on identity theft trends, new scams, and investigative

methods. The host cities include Clearwater Beach, Florida, and

Plymouth, Massachusetts.

As part of an ongoing nationwide series of free, interactive training

sessions offered through a partnership between LifeLock

and FBI-LEEDA, these summits will help to increase law enforcement’s

knowledge base on this crime. Since its inception in October 2008, the

series has reached 21 different cities across the country—from Orlando

to Detroit to Los Angeles—with more than 2,200 law enforcement officials

from more than 700 different agencies in attendance.

“This unique identity theft training program helps law enforcement

tremendously,” said Sergeant Walter Bowling of the Charlotte Mecklenburg

Police Department, Financial Crimes Unit. “With the current state of the

economy, we find that more identity thieves are preying on innocent

victims and, in turn, our case load goes up. It’s this type of free

training that all law enforcement should be exposed to. It educates law

enforcement on the latest trends of identity theft and new techniques

for combating the crime. Not only that, but the training gave us the

opportunity to share our field experiences with other officials in an

open and comfortable forum, and learn from each other, which is exactly

what should be happening.”

According to Javelin Strategy & Research’s “2010 Identity Fraud Survey

Report,” an estimated 11.1 million Americans were victims of identity

fraud last year. This is up from an estimated 9.9 million victims in

2009. The same report states that the number of arrests made in 2009

doubled from the previous year, to 12 percent.

“As the leader in this field, and with identity theft on the rise, it

would be an absolute disservice to consumers if we did not facilitate

this identity theft training,” said LifeLock Chairman and CEO Todd

Davis. “By getting local and statewide law enforcement together in one

room for a full day of thorough training, we are empowering officials to

understand this crime better and work to help stop it. I strongly

believe that, with time, this training will have an impact on the future

of identity theft.”

  • The Clearwater Beach, FL, area summit will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30

    p.m. on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at the Sheraton Sand Key

    Resort, 1160 Gulf Boulevard, Clearwater Beach, FL 33767.

  • The Plymouth, MA, area summit will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday,

    June 17, 2010. Location to be determined.
