Sponda Plc Press Release 3 January 2012 11:15 a.m.
Sponda revamps waste recycling at its properties
Property investment company Sponda Plc has signed an agreement with Lassila &
Tikanoja to develop waste management procedures and to increase the rate of
waste recycling at its properties. Following this agreement the CO2 emissions
of Sponda’s properties will be reduced by approximately 300 tonnes per month,
bringing the recycling rate up to around 90 per cent. At the same time the
volume of waste requiring disposal will decrease significantly to some 10 per
cent of the current level.
Waste sorting at Sponda’s properties will be simplified in the beginning of the
year 2012. This notably improves the utilisation of waste and facilitates waste
sorting for customers operating in premises owned by Sponda. The greater part
of the waste which previously ended up in landfills can be now processed for
utilisation at L&T’s modern waste processing plant in Kerava. According to
L&T’s analysis, the majority of the waste stemming from Sponda’s properties
consists of packaging material, which can be processed for reutilisation.
Sponda simplifies waste management for customers
Following this agreement, the mixed waste containers will disappear from the
most of Sponda’s properties. In those properties the mixed waste and energy
fraction will be sorted as II-quality energy fraction and bio waste will be
sorted separately. The change will decrease the amount of waste sorting and
thus also the rate of sorting faults at the properties. II-quality energy
fraction will be processed at L&T’s new production line mainly into industrial
dual fuel and recycling material.
- We wish to make waste processing easy for our customers. Assigning waste
sorting to the L&T recycling facility saves time for our customers and
maximises the recycling rate of waste stemming from our properties. This sits
well with Spondability i.e. our sustainability mindset and complements our
energy efficiency programme, which seeks to achieve energy savings in
collaboration with customers, says Ossi Hynynen, Senior Vice President.
- With this cooperation agreement, we can benefit from modern technology by
sorting a portion of customers’ waste mechanically at the plant. This measure
will maximise the waste utilisation rate. Our goal is to be able to offer
progressive solutions for companies just like Sponda, whose central values
include developing environmental friendliness as a part of their business
operations, says Petri Salermo, Business Director at L&T.
