Merck KGaA operates three main divisions: pharmaceuticals, life sciences, and performance materials. In the pharmaceutical group, branded drugs represent the majority of sales, with consumer products contributing the rest. The other segments manufacture products for life sciences and industrial customers, such as research labs and liquid crystals for flat-screen televisions. In 1995, the E. Merck KG family publicly sold part of the company, resulting in the current 30% public ownership of the firm.
